Damage Policy

Special Edition Book Quality Policy

Shadowfern Editions creates limited-run books using specialty finishes such as foiling, embossing, decorative endpapers and printed or sprayed page edges.

We expect every book to arrive in new, presentable and readable condition. However, specialty book production involves printing, binding and finishing processes that can create small differences between individual copies.

This policy explains how we distinguish normal production variation from damage that requires review.

Our Quality Standard

A special-edition book should:

• Be complete and readable
• Have a secure cover, spine and binding
• Contain all pages and advertised components
• Be substantially consistent with the product description
• Present well when viewed normally, without obvious structural or cosmetic damage

We assess the book as a complete product. The size, location, visibility and combined effect of any issues will be considered.

Normal Production Variation

The following will not usually be considered damage when minor and not materially noticeable during normal use:

• Small differences in colour, foil tone or print intensity
• Slight variation in the placement of foil, embossing or printed artwork
• Minor variation in sprayed or digitally printed page edges
• Faint manufacturing lines or impressions
• Small areas of rubbing along page edges or corners
• Light surface marks visible only under close inspection or angled lighting
• Mild page waviness caused by paper, binding or humidity
• Slightly uneven page trimming
• Small amounts of removable dust or production residue
• Slight movement or looseness in a removable dust jacket
• Minor differences between digital mock-ups and the finished product

These characteristics can occur during normal production and do not necessarily affect the quality, structure or use of the book.

Issues We Will Review

Please contact us if your book has an issue such as:

• Missing, duplicated, loose or incorrectly ordered pages
• Text that is missing, unreadable or substantially misprinted
• A detached cover, split binding or failed spine
• A significant dent, crushed corner or deep crease
• A tear, cut, puncture or substantial abrasion
• Water damage, mould or staining
• Sticky residue that cannot be safely removed
• Decorative artwork that is substantially misaligned, missing or obscured
• Severe fading, blurring or loss of sprayed-edge artwork or foiling
• Damage that is immediately noticeable under ordinary lighting
• Several smaller issues that collectively affect the book’s presentation
• Receipt of the wrong book, edition or product

Damage to a mailing box or protective packaging does not qualify by itself if the product inside is unaffected.

How We Assess Cosmetic Issues

Cosmetic issues are assessed according to:

• Where the issue appears
• How visible it is under ordinary lighting
• Whether it can be seen during normal handling rather than only under close inspection
• Whether it affects a major design element
• Whether there are multiple issues on the same item
• Whether the structure, readability or collectable presentation of the book is affected

A small issue in a prominent area may be treated differently from the same issue in a less visible location.

Reporting an Issue

Please inspect your order after delivery.

If you believe your item is damaged or defective, contact us as soon as possible, preferably within 14 days of delivery. This requested timeframe does not limit any rights available under applicable consumer protection laws.

Please include:

• Your name and order number
• A description of the issue
• A photograph showing the complete book
• Clear close-up photographs of the affected area
• Photographs of the mailing box, internal packaging and shipping label if the damage may have occurred during transit

Please keep the item and packaging until the claim has been assessed.

Available Remedies

Each claim will be reviewed individually.

If an item does not meet applicable consumer guarantees, the available remedy may include a replacement, refund, partial refund or another appropriate resolution.

As our editions are produced in limited quantities, an identical replacement may not always be available. If we cannot provide a replacement, we will offer another appropriate remedy in accordance with applicable consumer protection laws.

Please do not return an item before receiving return instructions.

Consumer Rights

Nothing in this policy excludes, restricts or modifies any consumer guarantee, right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded under applicable consumer protection laws.
